Debuting at IFA 2014 from 5-10 September, D3O introduces its range of impact protection and shock absorption materials plus applications to the European consumer electronics and wearable technologies sectors.
“D3O welcomes the opportunity to showcase at IFA the impact protection, shock absorption and vibration control smart materials and patented technology which be game changers for consumer electronics and wearable technologies.”
Working in partnership with Tech21, D3O’s globally patented impact protection technology is currently integrated into mobile phone and tablet accessories compatible with Apple, Sony, HTC and Samsung products, and can be found in worldwide Apple and T-Mobile stores. D3O partners with key global brands Burton Snowboards and Doctor Martens, and is funded by the US Army to test shock absorbing helmet liner technology to reduce the risk of head injuries caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Bringing the impact protection expertise honed in these sectors, D3O is introducing brands to the far-reaching impact protection, shock absorption and vibration control capabilities and applications of its patented technology and portfolio of smart materials at IFA:
1. D3O impact protection materials
A range of enhanced shock absorbing solutions which offers the ultimate in soft and flexible impact protection, developed for markets where high impact energies are experienced. The impact protection range of materials includes four grades of materials with diverse applications.
2. D3O cushioning materials
D3O’s range of soft, lightweight foams offers enhanced cushioning. The cushioning solutions are developed for markets where impact energies are typically lower. Thermoformable, the five grades of foam are developed for their performance properties of being lightweight, high performance and temperature stable. These enable downstream processing by partners. With these materials demonstrating promising anti-vibration properties, D3O is currently developing a range of further vibration dampening materials for the consumer electronics market.
3. D3O Smart Skin
D3O Smart Skin is a lightweight and low profile impact protection layer that can be directly applied to fabrics such as base layer or gloves, worn beneath an outer garment. The process involves encasing D3O protective foams within a thin TPU layer that provides excellent surface finish, colour options and water resistance. Available in a range of existing shapes or in a bespoke geometry developed specifically for a particular application, D3O Smart Skin can be applied by the customer to wherever they need protection. A key application for D3O Smart Skin is wearable technology for the sports and consumer electronics sectors. D3O Smart Skin is one of a range of composites which combine D3O technology with other materials including fabric-backing and dual density foams.
Marcus Hoenig, D3O’s Chief Business Development Officer, Advanced Concepts said:
For the consumer electronics market, products are getting ever smaller, more fragile, and more precious for individuals. D3O appreciates that the expectations and requirements for impact protection in this sector are always changing. Bringing industry-leading impact protection expertise from sports, defence and motorcycle apparel sectors, D3O welcomes the opportunity to showcase at IFA the impact protection, shock absorption and vibration control smart materials and patented technology which be game changers for consumer electronics and wearable technologies.
