The Ultimate in Motorcycle Protection...

The partnership aimed to make the ultimate motorcycle garment from the most advanced materials currently available. W. L. Gore and d3o™ Lab have been working together to design and manufacture a small production-run of unique seeding garments constructed from Gore-tex’s landmark new leather – the Pro Shell. The waterproof Pro Shell is the first ever leather to protect the rider from all weather conditions – rain, wind and sun – in one garment. In addition, the seeding garments are integrated with d3o™ components providing revolutionary impact protection which is soft and flexible, but still passes the harsh EN-1621-1 standard by providing excellent shock absorption.

The ‘Pro-Shell’  W L Gore physically combines a highly technical leather outer shell with a specifically developed GORE-TEX ® Pro Shell membrane into a single layer laminate. Achieving the leather specification itself is no easy task as it necessitates striking a fine balance between high levels of breathability, water repellence, and solar reflectivity. Very few tanneries globally can consistently produce such a product. This unique and patented laminate material comes in both solid and perforated form and in a 3-layer and 4-layer structure.   Click here for a real life test of the leather’s waterproof qualities!
 Also incorporated into the garment is state of the art TFL Cool System ® technology. This allows black garments to stay cooler in warm sunshine – between 20-30c – than standard black leather apparel. The technology also assists the ageing resistance so the leather stays strong for longer, even in the most challenging climates and environments.
  d3o™  d3o™ is a material constructed with Intelligent Molecules™, used as flexible method of protection in sports where freedom of movement and effective impact protection are intrinsic to the wearers performance. At slow speeds the molecules move freely making the material soft, flexible, and able to conform to your body. At high speeds however, like in an impact, the molecules lock together to provide excellent shock absorption.

The garments incorporating both materials were tested out by journalists at the Calafat race track, Spain in January (see images) and received high acclaim for the garment’s comfort, style and successful function. Rob Hull from MCN was particularly impressed with the integration of d3o™ commenting in a recent article “When riding you soon notice the benefits of no bulky-formed plastic armour locking your arms into place. Instead you get the freedom of having the feeling of no armour present.” The effectiveness of d3o™ was also tested with a couple of riders falling off the bikes at high speeds with no injuries. In the words of Simon Roots from Superbike: ‘Smart stuff’!    Look out for big brands utilising the Pro Shell and d3o™ in 2008.
